Getting to Ibiza

Happy 78th birthday to my favorite Pop! Wish I could be celebrating with you today. Here’s to many more to come!

Taken the night before my departure

Today Olivia and I traveled from Florence to Ibiza, and what an experience it was. We got on a train at 8:30 AM and arrived in Pisa at 9:30 AM. It was cloudy and rainy, but we found our way to the Leaning Tower on our own. It was a lot shorter than we had pictured! It was nice seeing it though along with the other thousand visitors._dsc0009

We ate lunch at a restaurant before making our way back to the train station around 1 PM. We researched the Pisa Mover which transports you from the train station to the airport for only 2 euros, and we hopped on it with many other travelers. It was a cramped shuttle!

We got to the airport and figured out how to get our visas checked at the Ryan Air desk. It was really cool doing this on our own in an international airport without the help of Marist or our parents. It brought back familiar and anxious feelings of JFK two months ago. We went through security with no major issues, but they did swab my fingers and shoes for some reason. I also forgot to empty my water bottle, so the security worker emptied it for me. 70% of the time I get stuck in security for something.

We went to our gate after security excited to board in an hour. Well, that did not happen. Our flight kept getting delayed! First it was one hour, then two, then three, then four, and finally five!!!! There went half our day in Ibiza! We were frustrated but didn’t let it bog us down. We played 500 Rummy on the airport floor while we charged our phones, ate, listened to music, people watched. After two hours, we saw a poster that said VIP Lounge 20 euro pass. Just that morning I watched a “New Girl” episode where Cece and Schmidt buy a guest pass to the VIP Lounge.

We figured what the heck, let’s check it out. We got there, and a nice woman at the front desk helped us purchase to tickets for 40 euros total. The lounge itself wasn’t crowded at all, and it was very nice. Free snacks, free drinks, fast wifi, a nice bathroom, comfy seats. We felt so high class!

We relaxed there and played more cards, watched Netflix, wrote postcards for three hours before it was finally time to board at 8:30 PM. The 20 euros was well worth it!

Olivia and I got on the plane, and of course I was asked to sit in the middle instead of my assigned aisle seat. At that point, I couldn’t care less, so I moved and journaled for the 90 minute flight. It was obviously dark when we landed, but I could tell we landed over water. One of the scariest experiences ever because you don’t know when the land is coming or if you’ll even land on land! Luckily, we did.

We got a cab at 11 PM and arrived to our Air BnB 10 minutes later. The cab driver drove about 30 MPH too fast, but we didn’t care since we just wanted to get there. We passed billboards to all the famous nightclubs, car rental places, McDonald’s. Our host welcomed us and showed us our room and bathroom. It was small but perfect for our stay. We went straight to bed, happy that we eventually made it. xo ~e.
